Thoughts on a painting by Munke
Lonely redhead by the sea,
why do you look away?
Today and yesterday,
tomorrow too,
dull rock, blind sea
and you.
What have you done?
Do voiceless tempests blaze in unseen eyes
or glittering careless worlds of tears
or blank despair like passing years
or flaming passion spent
or long delight
or he?
The sea, the rock and you
remain
alone in silence.
Your bright proud hair
dreams on
its quiet white
reverie,
slim and sad and still.
Dream long
your echo thoughts.
dream long, then softly,
softly
turn in time,
that I may lonely glimpse in lonely eyes
reflections of the sea.
